How Much Will It Help The Climate? https://insideclimatenews.org/news/13102023/biden-announces-huge-hydrogen-investment/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 00:55:45 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74521 The Energy Department awarded up to $7 billion in grants for clean hydrogen “hubs,” but environmentalists warn some of the money could prop up fossil fuels and fail to cut emissions.

PHILADELPHIA—President Joe Biden traveled to a marine terminal here on Friday to announce billions in funding for new clean hydrogen projects that he said would help the nation meet its climate goals while generating thousands of new high-quality jobs. Surrounded by lines of shipping containers on a dock along the Delaware River, Biden positioned the program as a critical piece of his economic and climate platforms.

Vessel Strikes on Whales Are Increasing With Warming. Can the Shipping Industry Slow Down to Spare Them?  https://insideclimatenews.org/news/10102023/vessel-strikes-on-whales-are-worsening-with-warming/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74297 Rising ocean temperatures and marine heat waves are pushing whales closer to busy shipping lanes. Flexible speed reduction areas could help prevent ship collisions, scientists say.

Last March, a California giant perished. The 49-foot humpback nicknamed Fran washed up on a beach in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay. Fran had visited these waters for the entirety of her 17-year life, easily recognized by Californians due to the distinctive markings and shape of her tail.

Apple Goes a Step Too Far in Claiming a Carbon Neutral Product, a New Report Concludes https://insideclimatenews.org/news/03102023/apple-claim-carbon-neutral-watch-draws-skepticism/ Tue, 03 Oct 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74254 The maker of the iPhone is a leader in efforts to reduce the climate impact of its products, but a recent claim about its new line of Apple Watches may be “climate-wash,” a Chinese environmental research organization says.

Apple’s recent announcement of its first-ever “carbon neutral” product was questioned in a new report by a Chinese environmental research organization that gathers and tracks data on greenhouse gas emissions from China’s manufacturing sector, which makes the majority of Apple products.

Why New York’s Curbside Composting Program Will Yield Hardly Any Compost https://insideclimatenews.org/news/01102023/brooklyn-curbside-composting-is-digesting/ Sun, 01 Oct 2023 09:00:00 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74194 This week, New York City’s curbside organics collection effort debuts in Brooklyn, where tons of food scraps will be processed to help deliver un-fracked natural gas to local residences. Is this the best use of the city’s food waste?

Moving to New York can be a culture shock. When Liz French decamped from Indiana to Long Island City, Queens, in 1989—well before it was a trendy place to live—she was sad to learn she’d lost access to a beloved childhood ritual: composting. Her parents, “kind of hippies,” had introduced her to the practice growing up in Bloomfield, Indiana, but, in the Big Apple, there was no gardening “or any sort of composting,” she said. Back then Long Island City was, even for New York, very much an industrial environment.

After meeting for months in secrecy, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s working group on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative on Friday endorsed participation in a “cap-and-invest” process to reduce utilities’ greenhouse gas emissions but stopped short of endorsing membership in RGGI.

Crucial for a Clean Energy Economy, the Aluminum Industry’s Carbon Footprint Is Enormous https://insideclimatenews.org/news/27092023/aluminum-industry-has-enormous-carbon-footprint/ Wed, 27 Sep 2023 04:01:00 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74124 A new report finds aluminum manufacturing worldwide emits more than a billion tons of carbon dioxide annually, as well as chemicals called perfluorocarbons that warm the planet for 50,000 years.

Aluminum is crucial for a clean energy economy, but its production is a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions as well as toxic air and water pollution, according to a new report by the Environmental Integrity Project on the “paradox” of aluminum.

Why Maryland Is Struggling to Meet Its Own Aggressive Climate Goals https://insideclimatenews.org/news/26092023/maryland-struggles-to-meet-climate-goals/ Tue, 26 Sep 2023 15:52:38 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74114 Even as federal money pours in for emissions reductions programs, the state still supports contentious waste-to-energy trash incineration and has trouble promptly connecting wind and solar projects to the grid.

Climate and environmental activists are advocating an end to waste-to-energy trash incinerators and an accelerated transition to wind and solar energy as the Maryland Department of the Environment considers proposals for achieving the state’s ambitious climate targets ahead of next year’s legislative session.

A Drop in Emissions, and a Jobs Bonanza? Critics Question Benefits of a Proposed Hydrogen Hub for the Appalachian Region https://insideclimatenews.org/news/26092023/appalachia-hydrogen-hub-benefits-disputed/ Tue, 26 Sep 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://insideclimatenews.org/?p=74107 The potential gains for Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio have not been clearly spelled out, and the science is being challenged, as the Department of Energy prepares to announce the builders of six to 10 federally funded hubs across the country.

PITTSBURGH—As the federal government nears a decision on which of the nation’s proposed “hydrogen hubs” will share up to $8 billion in startup money, critics of the idea in the Appalachian region are asserting that the program would do little to curb greenhouse gas emissions or create jobs, while increasing electricity prices for consumers and businesses.
